Some of our greatest discoveries are not ours alone. By partnering with community organizations and accomplished academic institutions, we’ve strengthened and multiplied the good that Emory faculty, staff, and students can do. These partnerships allow for endless possibilities to make real change. It’s the definition of community—a mission to benefit lives far beyond our geographic boundaries.

In an endeavor with Georgia Tech, we collaborate with the best in our pursuit of groundbreaking research. This project has attracted billions in federal research funding to the Winship Cancer Institute, Georgia’s only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, in partnership with the American Cancer Society. In addition to research you’d expect in health care, cancer, and scientific developments, Emory research delves into discoveries in areas as surprising as community advancement, business and analytics, technology, and social issues.

Conducting and implementing research is a team effort, from the facilities where data is collected and analyzed, to suppliers of materials, to administrative support. Researchers can find the specialized technology, equipment, and expertise they need in our 16 core facilities, the Division of Animal Resources, and a network of independent facilities and service centers. Further research and learning can then move into Emory’s libraries and digital catalogs, with special collections as diverse as our programs of study—from the Pitts Theology Library to our rare books collection dating back to the 13th century.

Experts in the Office of Sponsored Programs manage the paperwork for grants, contracts, and awards, freeing researchers’ time for investigation. And the Office of Compliance ensures that groundbreaking discoveries adhere to the highest legal, professional, and ethical standards. Finally, the Office of Technology Transfer helps bring discoveries to life through patent protection, marketing, license negotiation, and start-ups, with the goal of improving the health of the world around us.

Emory efforts have attracted more than $600 million in research awards to Georgia, and this year, we passed a new funding milestone of $894 million in awards for campuswide research. As the nation’s fifth-ranked infectious diseases program, we’re uncovering the causes and treatments for familiar and emerging diseases, making everyday life safer around the globe. Our third-ranked biomedical engineering program has led to breakthroughs like technology that improves the lives of people who use catheters, neuroscientists gaining new insights into brain health using AI and algorithms, and a long-distance stethoscope that’s made telemedicine appointments during the pandemic more comprehensive.
